Can My Loft Be Converted?

Is it possible to convert my loft? The most crucial thing to know before starting the process of converting your loft is whether it is appropriate for conversion. We've put up a few simple steps to help you figure out if you can convert your loft and acquire the extra room you need.

Is my loft high enough to be converted?

SkyLofts require a minimum distance of 2.2M or 7'2′′ from the top of your current ceiling joist to the underside of the highest point (ridge beam) to convert your loft, depending on the structure of your home. We've put together a simple video to assist you to figure out if your loft is suitable for conversion.

I have water tanks in my loft, is this a problem?

It's not an issue. However, in order to convert your loft, you will need to consider shifting these. When one of our professional consultants comes to see you, they can walk you through your alternatives.

Do you require planning permission?

Permitted development rights are used for the majority of loft conversions (PD). SkyLofts works within certain parameters to make this possible. For terraced residences, a volume allowance of 40 cubic metres is appropriate, whereas detached or semi-detached dwellings require a volume allowance of 50 cubic metres. Planning will be necessary if the intended work is outside of your PD rights or if the property does not have PD rights. Doesn't it appear to be difficult? Don't worry, SkyLofts will handle this application for you.

Do I need to contact a designer/architect beforehand?

No, we have our own design team here at SkyLofts. We can give our experience and knowledge to help them get the most out of the space available because they specialise in loft conversions. Of course, we can work with whatever previous plans you have and provide advice if necessary.

How long does the process take?

The planning process takes around 20 weeks from start to finish, depending on your existing condition.

How long does the build take?

The typical build time for a SkyLoft is a little under 8 weeks, though this varies depending on the size of the project.

Does SkyLofts project manage the build?

Yes, we oversee the entire process from your initial inquiry to the completion of your loft conversion. We deal with the design, construction, trades, and building codes.

I have a chimney, will you remove this?

This is dependent on whether it is a functioning chimney or one that has been abandoned. During their visit, our consultant will explain your alternatives to you, and if you agree to have the chimney removed, we will be able to do it as part of your contract.

How much will the loft conversion be?

This differs by property because there are a variety of elements to consider. Following their visit, our loft consultant will be able to create a completely itemised, no-obligation quote.
