Ladder Operation:

We've installed over 5000 of these Youngman's loft ladders over the years, and they just don't fail, which is why we give them a 5-year warranty. The turn catch is important: opening the hatch with the pole keeps it under your entire control; it won't come down as quickly as if you used a concealed push-catch.

Similarly, you pull the ladder down smoothly with the pole, keeping it under your full control. When the ladder is in the down position, it is critical that the catch on the right-hand side clicks into place.

Aluminium 2-section ladder

In our aluminium ladder range, we solely employ Youngman's two and three-part ladders. For various reasons, they are superior to the Abru or Werner types available at DIY stores: They slide smoothly (with plastic runners on aluminium) and don't screech or grind as they come down (metal on metal). Unlike the Abru ladder, the Youngman ladder treads are flat and slightly wider, whereas the Abru ladder treads are rounded and most customers tend to prefer flat rungs. More crucially, unlike the Abru ladder, the Youngman ladder slope angle is indefinitely adjustable. This means we can provide our customers with the exact slope of the ladder they need, whether it's to fit in tight spaces or to be more reassuringly less steep.

Other Principal benefits are:

  • Fits openings as small as 557mm x 406mm.: if you can fit into the loft a loft ladder can be fitted.

  • Tested and certified to BS 7553 Class G (General Use) up to 150kg

  • Fitted with wide, flat, non-slip treads and rubber feet for safe climbing.

  • 2 section ladder with 10 treads.

  • Optional handrail available - add £15

  • Floor to loft floor height from 1.55 to 2.6m.

  • Weighs just 5kg - easy to pull down and push up for storage

  • Comes with 4 ft loft pole to open hatch and pull down ladder

Telescopic Metal Ladder:

These ladders are an excellent compromise between our conventional aluminium loft ladders and our wooden loft ladders. They have a wonderful chunky feel to them, which, when combined with the deep treads, gives them a robust sensation when climbing.

Pros:

  • Only takes up about 10” in the loft

  • Really nice anodised aluminium finish - VERY smart!

  • Wider, deeper steps, almost as deep as the wooden ladders

  • Very chunky, solid construction

  • Rated up to 150kg - 23 stone!

  • Ideal for boiler-in-loft installations and servicing.

Cons:

  • Quite heavy - 13kg, (around 27lb) to push up fairly high to clip over securing bar when stowing away. Our regular 2-section ladder weighs 5kg.

  • Not quite as adjustable as our standard ladders, so not suitable for confined space on the landing e.g. in two-bed terrace houses.

  • Since the ladder doesn’t take up much loft space, it needs more hatch space, so it’s not suitable for loft openings under 50cm wide by 60cm deep.

  • No handrail is available due to the way the ladder telescopes down.

  • If you’d like one of these we can fit it without a quote visit first.

  • If it can’t be fitted we can fit a standard two-section ladder instead.

  • Don’t forget either option will also need a drop-down hatch.
